Maundy Thursday

About a decade ago, in a small cinderblock church on the main street of town, I experienced something I had never encountered before. Far from home and in the middle of a spiritual renewal in my own journey, I found myself open to new expressions of worship.

That evening, we gathered in the basement of the church. The men met in one room while the women gathered down the hall. We prayed, shared stories, and then did something that felt completely unfamiliar to my 21st-century world—we washed one another’s feet. A simple act of humble service. Physically lowering ourselves to meet another’s need.

It may seem unusual, but it was deeply meaningful. In that moment, worship moved beyond words and songs into something tangible and sacred. Since then, that simple ritual of humility and service has remained close to my heart.

Our sister church, Grantham BIC, will be hosting a Maundy Thursday service on April 2 at 6:00 p.m. The evening will include a shared meal, foot washing, and communion as we remember Jesus’ example of love and service.

This is a beautiful opportunity to observe the season leading up to Easter in a way that deepens the joy and meaning of Easter Sunday. If you’d like to attend, you’re welcome to simply show up. If you’d also like to help with the evening, please sign up here. For more information about the service, visit the Grantham BIC website.
